Getting Active at Kerang Primary School

Mayor Brian Gibson visited Kerang Primary School this morning to launch the 2017 Golden Shoe Trophy competition to the class who walks, scoots or cycles to school the most throughout Walk to School month in October.

Classes at Kerang Primary School will be competing against each other in an effort to win the prestigious Gannawarra Golden Shoe Trophy in 2017. Who do you think will be the winning class this year???

Last years winning class was Grade 5 /6 with 69% participation. Mayor Gibson challenged all classes to make it to over 75% participation in each class this year, with all grades keen to take up the challenge!

Last year 100% were involved in Walk to School! What an amazing achievement! Students walked, rode or scooted to school 1135 times throughout October 2016 which was almost 815 kms - that is like walking from Kerang to Sydney! Phew, we are tired just thinking about it... I wonder if Kerang Primary School will make it even further this year?? We can't wait to come back in November and find out!

The VicHealth Walk to School program promotes the importance of children being Active and Healthy in their communities and fitting at least 60 minutes of physical activity into their daily lives. Getting actively to school, the school bus, or while at school not only helps keep children fit and healthy, it also helps them to stay alert, to concentrate and improves learning outcomes.

The Gannawarra VicHealth Walk to School program is rolled out across the Gannawarra Shire as a Gannawarra Local Agency Meeting (GLAM) partnership project. This is a partnership between Gannawarra Shire Council, Northern District Community Health, Kerang District Health, Cohuna District Hospital, Mallee District Aboriginal Service, Victoria Police and Mallee Family Care with support from the Southern Mallee Primary Care Partnership.
