The competition is on at Koondrook Primary School

Councillor Steve Tasker visited Koondrook Primary School on Tuesday afternoon to officially launch the competition for the 2017 Gannawarra Golden Shoe Trophy.

The competition begins on day 1 of Term 4 and students were keen to get active over the holiday break so that they are fit and ready for Walk to School to start on 3rd October.

The winning class of the 2016 Gannawarra Golden Shoe Trophy at Koondrook Primary School with the highest participation throughout Walk to School month at Koondrook Primary School was Grade 4 /5 /6. Who will be the winning class this year???

This year Koondrook Primary School students ran a poster design competition to promote the 2017 Gannawarra Golden Shoe Trophy across the Gannawarra Shire. The winning poster will be on display at all schools across the Shire to remind students to Walk, Ride and Scoot to school throughout October. Choosing a winner was very difficult, with lots of talented students creating excellent posters.

The winner of the 2017 Poster Competition was.... Drum Roll please....  Logan Faul!! Closely followed by our Runner Up Emily Wright! Congratulations to Logan and Emily on their winning designs!

This will be Koondrook Primary School's fifth year participating in the Walk to School program. Last year 87% of students walked, rode or scooted 477 times during October - that’s about 343 kilometres – equivalent to walking along the Murray River to Lake Hume right up the top of the Murray River (341kms)! We can’t wait to see how far the students walk this year!

All ten primary schools across the Gannawarra Shire are participating in this year’s Walk to School program with students encouraged to ride, walk or scoot to and from school, the school bus or while at school, throughout October.

The Walk to School program promotes the importance of children being Active and Healthy in their communities and fitting at least 60 minutes of physical activity into their daily lives. Getting actively to school, the school bus, or while at school not only helps keep children fit and healthy, it also helps them to stay alert, to concentrate and improves learning outcomes.

The Gannawarra VicHealth Walk to School program is rolled out across the Gannawarra Shire as a Gannawarra Local Agency Meeting (GLAM) partnership project. This is a partnership between Gannawarra Shire Council, Northern District Community Health, Kerang District Health, Cohuna District Hospital, Mallee District Aboriginal Service, Victoria Police, and Mallee Family Care with support from the Southern Mallee Primary Care Partnership.
